Once again our favorite generative AI tool, Claude by Anthropic, is having service disruptions across all of their services except, strangely, for Claude for Government. I guess they are on more robust or air-gapped servers?
Perhaps one day we are going to see full green bars across the 90-day record (as we strive to accomplish on our own hosting platform).
This gives us a chance to reflect on how our workflows have changed over the last couple of years. Not long ago we had reliable human powered ops that had been in place for about 15-20 years. Not much changed since the innovation SaaS brought us as web creators. Generative AI was at first laughable, then slightly concerning, then VERY concerning and back to a relative comfortable zone where we understand its powers and limitations.
When a system wide outage occurs it’s now a major concern, as opposed to a minor annoyance. How many aspects of our business and workflow have been loaded into our AI providers’ systems? Too many?
I would argue for diversity of AI tools and workflows, but that requires massive compute power and competition among the flagship models is fierce. This week it’s Claude Fable, next it’s some Chinese model named after an animal, Deepseek or ChatGPT Sol. Are we doomed to be at the mercy of a mostly stable handful of AI providers. I really hope not.
We have other ambitious plans on the horizon for more reliable and cheaper compute. Elon Musk and SpaceX have announced a project to build AI data centers in space. Can it be done? Absolutely.
I don’t think its what one would envision though. I don’t think it would be a building sized, massive centralized mass of GPUs orbiting the planet. I believe we would be looking at thousands of smaller Starlink-like satellites that will be interconnected in a mesh and distributed across the orbital surface.
