You Signed Up for Hosting! Now What?

First off, welcome aboard and thank you. You just made a great decision for your website. Below is everything we need to move your site onto our hosting and take great care of it. Don't worry about the technical words; we explain each one in plain English further down, and we're happy to walk you through any of it. You will not need to understand any of this yourself.

Your quick checklist

Send everything to tech@gillytech.com, or book a quick call below and we'll do it together, live. Only have some of it? Send what you've got and we'll help with the rest. (Please don't email passwords in plain text; ask us for a secure link.)

The details, what each item means

1. Access to your domain name

In plain English: Your domain name is your web address, the yourbusiness.com people type to find you. It's registered at a company called a domain registrar (GoDaddy, Namecheap, Google Domains, and so on; whoever you bought it from or pay for it each year).

Why we need it: We need to update your domain's nameservers. Think of these as the signpost that tells the internet where your website lives. Pointing that signpost at our servers is what actually moves your site onto our fast, managed hosting.

How to give it to us:

  • If your domain is at GoDaddy: The easiest way is to “delegate access” to us. Log in to GoDaddy, go to Account Settings → Delegate Access, click Invite to Access, and enter tech@gillytech.com. Choose “Products, Domains & Purchase” and send the invite. That's it; we'll take it from there, and you stay the owner the whole time.
  • If your domain is somewhere else: Just tell us where it's registered and we'll send you simple, click-by-click instructions for your specific provider.

2. Admin access to your WordPress website

In plain English: This is the login you (or whoever built your site) use to edit your website, usually found by adding /wp-admin to the end of your web address. An administrator is the top-level account that can change anything.

Why we need it: So we can manage your site, keep it updated, and make sure everything works perfectly after the move.

How to give it to us: Add a new administrator user with the email tech@gillytech.com. In your WordPress dashboard, go to Users → Add New, enter that email, set the role to Administrator, and save. WordPress will email us the rest. If that feels like too much, just send us your own login and we'll set it up; then you can change your password afterward.

3. Access to your current web host

In plain English: Your web host is the company whose computers store your website right now, the “land” your site sits on before it moves to us. Common ones are Bluehost, SiteGround, GoDaddy Hosting, HostGator, WP Engine, and many others.

Why we need it: To make an exact copy of your existing site and move it onto our hosting without losing anything. (If we're building you a brand-new site from scratch, you can skip this one; just let us know.)

How to give it to us: Send us your login for that host, or add tech@gillytech.com as a user in their control panel. Not sure who your host is? No problem; tell us and we'll help you figure it out.

4. Whether your email is connected to your current host

Good news first: Moving your website to our hosting will not interrupt your email. We've managed this exact process for over 16 years, and keeping your email running is part of the job.

All we need is a quick answer, and we never log into your email or read your messages. We just need to know whether your email is tied to your current web host, because that's the one thing moving hosts can affect. If your email runs on Google Workspace (Gmail for business) or Microsoft 365 (Outlook), it's completely separate and nothing changes at all. If your email came bundled with your current host, just let us know so we make sure it keeps working without a hitch. Not sure? Tell us the email address you use and we'll figure it out for you.

5. Any paid plugins or themes

In plain English: Plugins are little add-ons that give your website extra features (contact forms, online stores, booking calendars, and so on). A theme controls how your site looks. Some are free; some you pay for yearly with a “license key,” a code that keeps them updated and secure.

Why we need it: So your paid features keep getting updates and don't stop working down the road.

How to give it to us: If you know you pay for any plugins or themes, send us the license keys or the logins where you bought them. Don't know? That's fine; we'll spot them when we look at your site.

6. A contact and your ideal timing

What we need: The best name, email, and phone number to reach you during setup, plus a heads-up on any timing that matters. For example, if you're running a big sale or sending a newsletter next Tuesday, tell us and we'll schedule the switch around it so nothing is ever disrupted.

That's it, what happens next?

Once you've sent what you can, we take over. We'll copy your site, move it onto our fast servers, keep your email and other existing services running, and double-check every page before anything goes live. You don't have to lift another finger, and we'll keep you posted at every step.
